Button Floozies

Coming up on November 16 is the day set aside to celebrate buttons, National Button Day; this is thanks to the efforts of the National Button Society .  Here are some of the buttons that are currently giving me joy: Bakelite heaven -- sewn to a bracelet cuff in amazing colors!  Bakelite and other early plastics. When you have lovely friends you often received unique and beautiful button art as gifts!  Shell set in metal. Two lovely pieces of jewelry created by someone, from buttons.  Plastic and metal. I discovered some carded buttons that were identified at a recent estate sale I visited.  These are my current favorites! He's a little blurry because he wouldn't sit still -- look at this little squirrel!  That tail! In this collection there are glass, ceramic, pearl, and plastic buttons.  I found each grouping of buttons in a glass jar  that I bought at a yard sale.  I purchased multiple jars of buttons that day.  I hope you enjoy looking at them!

I pulled these metal buttons from a glass olive jar of many buttons.  They were purchased in an antique mall in PA.  These really stood out.  Check them out... Do you have any information on these?

I found these 2 buttons in a large jar of mixed vintage buttons. I found the jar in a thrift store. These buttons are made of a brown/black molded plastic. They are to look like wood.They are approximately 1.5 inches round. They look like they belong on a vintage jacket or coat.

One social media site I belong to is called The Vintage Village . It is a Ning community site, for those of you familiar with that. Many of the members have vintage or antique shops (hence the name), but others do not and are collectors or just interested in the subject. Members have their own "page" and can post photos and links to stuff they sell, whether on Etsy, Ruby Lane, Zibbet, or other websites. Today this caught my eye, posted by an Etsy shop by the name of Quinsippi Mercantile, who specializes in paper ephemera. I've been on the lookout for more vintage boxes to use as button storage.  The other day, I found one and ordered it from an Etsy seller: It's a flat, red box made of very heavy paper.  The linen-like cover has a label that says, KB1, Asst. of Push Buttons.  Even though I'm pretty sure they're not talking about sewing buttons, I thought that was fun and rather fitting! I bought it because of all the cool little compartments inside; here, as you can see, I have begun to fill it with some of my vintage buttons with paste, or rhinestones, or jewels of any kind.  I even put a few in that have little formica flakes; those are called composition buttons. There's nothing special about these buttons except that they are older.  And that I like them. They're not valuable, but they are important to me. I am so loving playing with my buttons!

My partner, Tamra, and I have sent and received our tins in the Fall in Love with Buttons 2012 Swap!  Here's the one she made for me:   Isn't it lovely?  She decoupaged it in Fall shades of green and brown -- and just LOOK at the gorgeous selection of buttons she sent! Here's a peek at the inside and the bottom; she used buttons for feet!  Tamra also gifted me that hand made barrette made of buttons!  How sweet is that?  I don't have any button barrettes, so it is really special! Here's the tin I made for Tamra.  I used fall themed papers, ribbons, and a bit of lace.  She said she liked vintage, like me, so I decorated the top with lace, vintage millinery flower pieces, and a very pretty old button.
