Stories are my favorite thing about buttons--I always wonder who they belonged to and how they got wherever they are today.  But I've ventured out on a limb and I'm trying something crafty with buttons. I've decided to combine my love of paper art, vintage buttons and reading by making vintage button bookmarks and bundling them with copies of my novel, THE BUTTON COLLECTOR.  This is new for me and I'd love to hear how I can do it better. I start by writing a word in calligraphy on a page from an old grammar book.  I cut it out and singe the edges so that it appears antiqued and then adhere it to steampunk cardstock.  For the first ones I used double sided tape, but I am going to switch to adhesive spray in the future.  I chose the word REJOICE to be a good match for the holidays. I then had the bookmark laminated at a copy shop, punched a hole in it and added a ribbon.  I picked out a button from my collection--no idea if it's worth anything b...

I made a visit to the local Salvation Army Thrift Store to look for things for my ART CLASSES. I came across a large bag of BUTTONS ON CARDS! What a find! This is only half of this bag of buttons. Most are plastic, and there are some that have metal accents. I noticed that I had a collection from the following button companies: Costumakers-- made in the U.S.A LaMode Buttons-- made in Italy, Japan, and Holland Streamline-- made in Holland, italy, and Thailand LaPetite-- made in Germany Lansing Co.-- made in Japan Premiere Collection-- made in Italy This is a nice addition to my ever growing BUTTON COLLECTION! Since I've written a novel entitled The Button Collector, at some point I figured out that it wouldn't be such a bad idea for me to learn a little bit about button collecting.  This became especially apparent when people started contacting me with their button collecting questions! At first I did some research through books and the internet, but eventually I was invited to a real live meeting of a real live button club.  Woo Hoo!  Of course, I went. The particular meeting I attended was with the Western North Carolina Button Club. It started with our hostess wowing us with her collection of 19th-Century Mandarin hat buttons, but I was also quite impressed by many other buttons the members passed around--the Victorian button nails used to hang pictures, the mourning buttons made of hair, the smugglers' buttons  . . . and many more I can't remember. I chose buttons from my collection that would complement an Abstract Painting used as a background. The art is by me, Sue Marrazzo, artist, and button collector. I really wanted to show-off the buttons and make them the "STAR." In shooting photos for this post...I realized how each button is like ART. Each has a style, design, color, shape, and is composed of different materials. I am featuring: wooden, metal, resin, acrylic and glass buttons.  Take a look at these ARTFUL BUTTONS... Paying a visit last week to my favorite local antique mall, I really wasn't even looking specifically for buttons, but this is what happens when you keep an open mind. I came across a booth that had 11 little cards of antique buttons on a table, in singles, doubles, and one card of triplets.  I stood there for quite a while inspecting them all, wondering which, if any (!) to purchase. Not only were they lovely, but they also were rather ridiculously inexpensive. How often do you come across that? I picked out 2 cards--the ones with tiny detailed scenes and left the rest behind.   Well, I'm sure you can guess what happened... I couldn't get them out of my mind, rationalizing the notion of buying them all. You know how that is. So, about 10 or 15 minutes and 1 1/2 aisles later I told my partner-in-crime (my mother, that is) that I wanted to go back and look at the buttons again, to which she replied, "Well, yes, of course, go on." Yep, that's me, 'Jaynie come-lately'... Hi everyone!  My name is Jayne, and I'm a new(er) Button Floozie.  I can't believe it's been over two months since I've contacted Laurie about writing for this wonderful blog, and I'm just getting around to my first post.  Yikes! Can I blame it on perimenopausal forgetfulness? Buttons are relatively new on the list of things I like.  I've always been drawn to smaller objects, and buttons ~ in their tiny cute way ~ have beaconed me to snatch them up whenever I come across them at estate sales, yard sales, thrift stores etc. As a geeky, Librarian (well former) ~ I'm always and forever digging through shelves and piles of used books.  Here are some secondhand books about buttons that I've picked up along the way: I realize that newer additions of these books have been published, but for a newbie like me these are just fine.  At this point, I'm more interested in the history of buttons...
